Telematics leads: new and expanding HGV fleets

The fleets that are about to outgrow their tracking.

A small fleet manages with a phone and a spreadsheet. A fleet that has just been allowed to double, or to open a second site, finds out quickly that it cannot see where its vehicles are, how its drivers are driving or what its fuel is costing. That is the week a telematics conversation is welcome rather than cold.

Two-yard haulier grows from 9 to 21 vehicles

  • Authorised vehicles rise from 9 to 21; trailers from 6 to 18.
  • A second operating centre 40 miles from the first is added.
  • Standard national licence, trading for six years.

Twenty-one vehicles across two yards forty miles apart, at an operator that has never had to manage vehicles it cannot see. The size and the second site together are the moment tracking gets bought.

What puts a card here
An operator is cleared to grow beyond the size its current arrangements can see.
When the money moves
Systems are bought as the new vehicles arrive, usually within two or three months.

Three things the card tells you that a list cannot.

The permission is the start of it. What makes the call worth making is what the other records say about the company holding it, 13 of them read together.

  1. The size of the fleet before and after, because the jump from under ten vehicles to over twenty is where most operators first buy tracking.
  2. Whether the growth adds an operating centre, which means vehicles out of sight of the yard for the first time.
  3. Whether the operator runs a restricted or a standard licence, which tells you whether transport is its business or a side of it.

Who reads this one.

  • Telematics and vehicle tracking
  • Vehicle cameras and safety systems
  • Fuel cards and fuel management
  • Fleet management software

Questions about this one.

Can you tell whether they already have telematics?
Not from the records, and we will not pretend to. What we can tell you is the size and shape of the fleet, which is a good guide: an operator crossing twenty vehicles or opening a second site is at the point where most buy for the first time or replace what they have.
Do you cover van fleets?
Only where the vehicles need an operator's licence, which means goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. Pure van fleets do not appear.
